Transform children’s rooms with these simple yet stylish decorating ideas:

Twice as nice!

Use two colours together on the same wall or adjacent walls for a simple yet striking look. Feature walls work wonderfully in children’s rooms; opt for a bold colour for a stylish accent that’s easy to update. Alternatively, make a statement with a painted border – simply leave a square border around the edge of a brightly painted wall to create a ‘frame’. To enhance the look, use different colours on different walls. Complementary colours work best or colours that sit close together on the colour spectrum, while borders look striking in white for real stand-out or coloured to harmonise the scheme.

Wall Art

Available in all shapes, sizes and colours, wall stickers are a great way to add personality to children’s rooms and can be easily removed and updated. Consider the background paint colour as part of the scheme when selecting wall sticker designs to ensure you achieve a cohesive look. Soft, muted paint shades will showcase stickers best, ensuring that your chosen design takes centre stage. Alternatively, try a paint effect such as stencilling to add pattern and texture; for a subtle look, opt for one shade lighter or darker than your wall colour.

Painted Furniture

Children’s rooms are ideally suited to painted furniture; from cots and dressers to shelving, toy boxes, desks and occasional chairs, there’s lots of opportunity to add colour and style to new or tired furniture. Treasured heirlooms or junk shop finds can be upcycled to create something really special. Try painting a wooden chair or stool in a co-ordinating colour and use as a bedside table, thoughtfully arranged with a stack of books or bedside lamp to encourage a budding bookworm. Or, paint shelves a bold colour to create stand-out for collections of toys, prints or keepsakes.

Available in all 120 colours in the Mylands palette, Mylands Gloss, Eggshell and Matt paint for wood and metal offers a choice of colour and sheen with outstanding durability and easy after-care.

Colour Psychology

Blue is a popular choice for boys bedrooms and pink for girls, but it’s worth thinking about how colour affects mood too. Blue is well-known for its calming effect, so it’s ideal for providing a tranquil environment for excitable youngsters. Yellow in its paler form or as a rich creamy neutral is soft and subdued; well suited to nurseries.
